Borate Rods Against Wood Decay

Cobra™ Rods are a way to spot treat decay prone areas such as log ends that are already coated with a finish.

Once inserted into damp or wet wood, a borate and copper complex in Cobra Rods dissolves and then spreads the active ingredients to the area surrounding the rod. This eliminates active decay fungi and helps prevent rot for 8 to 10 years.

Cobra Rods are 7/16" in diameter and are two inches in length. A 1/2" diameter drill bit is used for installation. The installation holes may be plugged with the accompanying plastic plugs or Energy Seal.

A typical six to eight inch round log end will require two 2” long Cobra Rods inserted within 4 inches of the butt end.

For preventative treatment of wood, follow the Recommended Application Rates table. When treating exposed ends or joints, Cobra Rods should be installed within six inches of the exposed end or joint.

Installing Cobra Rods

Use a ½” drill bit to drill hole. Drill hole at least 3 -¾” inches deep.
Clean out the hole and insert the Cobra Rod. Insert the plastic plug into the hole.

Sealing Cobra Rods

Using a screw driver twist the plug clockwise. Place the plug about ¼” below the surface of the wood.
Fill the hole with Energy Seal. Smooth with tool or finger.

We had an infestation of powder post beetles on one side of our home. We were told by our neighbor that Perma-Chink Systems had a preservative that would take care of it. We applied the Shell Guard Concentrate and had to wait a couple weeks for it to dry before staining. We noticed over the next several months that it had to be working since we didn't see as much dust around the holes. It has been a year now and everything is great! I would recommend this product to anyone if they are having issues with insects.

My girlfriend and I bought a foreclosed conventional home that had major water damage in the master bedroom area. I asked around for different products that would help stop the rot from continuing and was given Perma-Chinks number. We purchased the Shell Guard Concentrate and applied to the entire crawl space. We then also removed all the paneling and cardboard ceiling squares (home built in 1974) and applied the Shell Guard there as well. This product is easy to use and no worries around your pets and kids. I have recommended this to many of my friends and feel this is something any household can use in preventing rot. Thank you.

For the cost and ease of application you’d be nuts not to use RTU. It’s like an additional insurance policy for your log home. You pour the product into a garden sprayer and saturate the logs. That’s it! It took me 3 hours to do my entire house. This is my second log home, I used RTU on my other home and never had any rot or insect issues. Do yourself a favor, don’t skip this extra step!

Powder Post Beetles dead! I built a porch on my home 3 years ago. On the porch, I built cabinets using old barn wood that I had heated to kill bugs. A year or two later, I started seeing little piles of sawdust on my counter tops. Sunday, I mixed up some Armor Guard and water and put it into a Cajun Injector that I use to marinade meat and injected the solution into those tiny holes. It really went into the wood well in some areas. I guess by injecting the solution I got it right to their food source, they ate it, and died!
